Dr. Ed Mapes graduated from the Michigan State University
School of Veterinary Medicine in 1980, and engaged in active practice until 2001 as owner and President of ELM
Animal Hospital PC in Roseville, Michigan. Dr. Mapes developed a practice that grew over 560% in size, and accepted
referral patients from several area hospitals requiring advanced surgical and medical care. Ed was selected as a member of
Who's Who in Veterinary Medicine, contributed medical articles to Veterinary Practice Magazine, and served as President of
the Macomb County Veterinary Medical Association.
Dr. Mapes also authored newspaper columns for 16 years
at the Macomb Daily, contributing hundreds of articles that provided pet care information to thousands of readers, and had
a radio talk program - Ask the Vet - at a local radio station.
Ed left the veterinary profession for nine years, becoming
a world class sailor involved in teaching his expertise to students yearning to learn the methods of sailing the oceans.
He wrote three books on the subject, and presided over a thriving business known as Voyager Ocean Passages. The success
of the business, however, took him away from home more each year; finally becoming too much and prompting a return to a more
stable home life and the veterinary field.
Ed set about on a six month period of intensive study to become fully updated on the latest treatments, medications, and surgical
procedures. His return to the active practice of Veterinary Medicine in January of 2010 brings Dr. Mapes full circle
- from Doctor to world class sailor and educator - and back to Dr. Mapes once again.
He provides pet care
in both Medicine and Surgery, and is head of Surgery at Animal Medical Center in McKinney, Texas. Dr. Mapes has also resumed the publication of articles concerning
pet care and health matters in cities throughout north Texas in the Star Community Newspapers. These columns
appear both in the printed and on-line publications. Please visit the site at www.scntx.com and navigate to the Pets column, or click the link below (Star Community Newspapers). If you are interested in consulting with Dr. Mapes, he can be reached at:
